What to expect
Your initial session will start with a discussion of current physical issues, medical conditions, relevant injuries or surgeries. Each session entails a structural assessment to determine the best treatment approach for you. Your practitioner will observe how you stand and walk, as well as other specific movements in order to personalise your treatment. Men receive work in underwear or a swimsuit, women in bra and underwear or a two-piece swimsuit. Working Together
A client's engaged awareness and presence is an essential aspect of the SI process. The positive changes to your structure are largely achieved through your enhanced sensation, connection and understanding, rather than merely the force of the therapist's hands. The combined effort of therapist and client frees and repositions restricted tissues, while facilitating a new bodily engagement and coordination from within. |
On the table
Most of the soft tissue manipulation is performed with the client lying on a treatment table while your therapist sensitively applies pressure to the restricted tissues. SI is not always a passive experience, as with most massage or manual therapy. Often, you will be asked to synchronise small movements or focused breathing with the therapist's manual work. |
Off the table
Not all your time will be spent lying on the treatment table. Parts of the session may entail you sitting, standing or moving. Working more actively with gravity, the therapist is able to assess and enhance the ongoing effects of the work. Importantly, this also provides you a moment to sense, observe and start to integrate the changes as they occur. Subtle movement exercises allow you to explore new ways of orienting and moving as your restricted tissues open up. Your therapist may suggest exercises, or perceptual practices to work with in between sessions in order to reengage with these changes in your daily life. |
Sessions and Timing
Structural Integration is a wholistic way of understanding and working with your body's strengths and challenges. Single sessions or a short series of sessions can be designed to address your presenting needs and issues. However, to address long term, body-wide restrictions and imbalances, committing to the SI 10 series is often the most efficient and beneficial. For those choosing a series of work, the average spacing between sessions is one to three weeks. Generally speaking, more than four weeks gap between sessions is not ideal for those undertaking a process of change; the body tends to lose momentum if interrelated changes are spread over too long a time. |
